Garmin announced today it has added sport video to its product line with the VIRB and VIRB Elite waterproof cameras. The HD 1080p units are protected by their own IPX-7 housing, requiring no cases to withstand the elements (they were tested for immersion in one meter of water for 30 minutes). An optional case is required for extensive underwater use. The VIRB camera also includes a 1.4-inch color display making it easier to set up shots and review footage. It also includes image stabilization and lens distortion correction as well as Garmin’s ANT+ connectivity function, for linking with other Garmin products. The cameras can also shoot still photos — even while recording video — with 16 megapixel resolution.

The VIRB Elite model also includes WiFi, data sensors and a GPS chip. Both VIRB models are powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery that can record up to three hours of footage, according to Garmin. A wide array of mounting hardware is available. The cameras use standard micro-SD data cards up to 64 gigabytes, enough for up to seven hours of HD footage. Garmin is also launching a mobile app for preview, playback and remote functionality. It also offers free desktop software for uploading and editing VIRB videos and upload capability for YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
