February 14, Kotzebue, Alaska / Boeing 727

At about 1750 Alaska time, a Boeing 727-100 was damaged on approach to Ralph Wien Memorial Airport. No one aboard the Part 121 cargo flight was injured. The operator said that the pilot was on a visual approach when he overshot the runway centerline while turning from base to final. The pilot made a left and a right turn to realign the airplane with the centerline, and during the right turn, the right wing struck the snow-covered ground….

December 12, Jacksonville, Fla. / Piper Cherokee Six

At about 19:41 eastern time, a Piper PA-32-260 crashed while making a missed approach at Jacksonville International Airport. All four aboard were killed. The flight departed Fort Lauderdale three hours earlier and flew to St. Augustine, where it made a missed approach. The flight diverted to Craig Airport in Jacksonville, where it made a missed approach. It then diverted to Jacksonville International Airport, where the pilot missed another approach, and then the flight was lost from radar. The wreckage was not found for 18 hours….

February 14, East Moriches, N.Y. / Classic IV

At 1330 eastern time, an amateur-built Classic IV crashed during landing at Lufker Airport. The pilot suffered minor injuries. The pilot said he was practicing high-speed taxi runs when the airplane inadvertently became airborne. He continued the takeoff, remained in the pattern and set up for a landing. The airplane bounced and the pilot added a bit of power. The airplane then became airborne again, banked to the left and crashed. The pilot said it was his first flight in this type of airplane….

February 16, Paradise Island, Bahamas / Grumman Mallard

At about 1310 eastern time, a Grumman G-73T operating as a Part 121 scheduled flight was damaged while landing at Paradise Island. The flight crew of two and four passengers reported no injuries. The captain said the first officer was at the controls at the time of the accident. Boat traffic and waves made the landing area rough, and as the airplane prepared to touch down the airplane started to skip. The captain told the co-pilot to add power, but before he could the airplane landed in the water and became airborne again due to the choppy water. December 14, San Jacinto, Calif. / Cessna Turbo Centurion

At about 15:28 Pacific time, a Cessna T210L struck mountains about four miles northeast of San Jacinto, killing the pilot. Minutes before the accident the pilot had received an IFR clearance for the GPS-A approach to Hemet-Ryan Airport. At the time of the accident, the airplane was between the initial and final approach fixes, but the pilot apparently had flown through the final approach course and the impact site was approximately 5.9 nm east of the approach course. The route was in an area where radar and radio coverage is sometime sporadic….

At approximately 1500 central time, a Piper PA-30 overran the runway at Jonesville Airport. The pilot was not injured. A witness reported that the pilot attempted to land on runway 6 but came in too high and fast to land. He then turned around and made an approach to runway 24. The airplane touched down more than halfway down the 3,000-foot runway and ran off the end….

February 17, Newbolds Corner, N.J. / Piper Cherokee 140

At 0939 eastern time, a Piper PA-28-140 was damaged in a forced landing after losing engine power near Newbolds Corner. The pilot and passenger received minor injuries. The pilot reported that the airplane had recently received an annual inspection. The pilot had departed Bedford, Mass., with full fuel tanks and was in cruise flight when the engine started to act like it was running out of fuel. He made a forced landing two miles from the nearest airport. Examination of the wreckage found a leaking B-nut on the exit side of the engine-driven fuel pump. The nut was found to be finger-tight and needed two full turns to stop the leak….

May 25, Dayton, Nev. / Cessna 310

At about 1755 Pacific time, a Cessna 310N made a forced landing short of the runway while on final approach at Dayton. The pilot suffered minor injuries. The pilot said he was on final approach when the left engine quit. He secured the engine, then the right engine quit. The pilot realized that he was landing on the auxiliary fuel tanks, which were nearly empty, and the airplane was too low to attempt an engine restart….

December 19, Sanford, Fla. / Pitts S-1S

At about 12:30 eastern time, a Pitts S-1S nosed over during landing roll at Orlando Sanford International Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said he was landing on runway 09 center when a light tailwind picked up the tail of the airplane. The airplanes propeller struck the ground, and the airplane nosed over and landed upside-down on the runway. Winds at the time were from 260 degrees at 10 knots. …

December 20, Lewiston, Maine / Cessna Caravan

At 20:00 eastern time, a Cessna 208B struck an antenna after an aborted takeoff from Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said the airplane was covered with snow when she arrived at the airport at 19:15. She preflighted the airplane, loaded the cargo and then cleaned the snow from the airplane with a ladder and broom. She checked for snow contamination again before takeoff, but during the roll the airplane lifted off only momentarily before settling back to the runway. Her attempt to stop the airplane before the end of the unpaved runway was unsuccessful. …
