AOPA’s Mark Baker held a town hall meeting at the Sun ‘n Fun campus yesterday, announcing the industry organization’s plan to bring more people into flying and keep pilots flying. One of the biggest initiatives on the slate is increasing the number of active flying clubs. Baker referred to flying clubs as “the future of aviation,” and there are currently more than 640 flying clubs in AOPA’s network, including 10 brand new ones added just last year. Baker hopes to increase that number significantly in 2016 with a contest offering up a Reimagined Cessna 150 with an approximate retail value of $68,000 to a startup flying club.

Between now and September 1, people interested in starting a flying club can apply for the Flying Club 150 Giveaway by clicking this link. Established clubs are not eligible, and there are several requirements that have to be met before a group can apply. The group must be listed as an AOPA “club in formation” and have at least four members and several officer positions identified. The group must also get a quote for flying club insurance through AOPA and have a draft of bylaws for the club.

The winner of the Flying Club 150 Giveaway will be announced on October 1.
