Key Takeaways:

  • Airbus successfully flew an A380 aircraft with one of its four engines running on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for the first time.
  • The unblended SAF used for the three-hour test flight was produced from hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA), primarily derived from used cooking oil and other waste fats.
  • This A380 test, following previous trials on other aircraft, is a significant step towards Airbus's goal of achieving 100% SAF certification for its aircraft by the end of the decade.
  • Increasing the use of SAF is considered a key pathway for the aviation industry to achieve its ambition of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Airbus said it flew an A380 with one of its four engines running on 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, for the first time on March 25.

The flight followed a series of earlier SAF tests using the company’s A350 and A319neo aircraft.
