Older Garmin GNS 4xx/5xx navigators can use OBS mode to fly the inbound leg of a random hold but cannot program full ad-hoc holds that are not in the database.
Effective ATC communication relies on pilots using proper phraseology, and a pilot operating under a cruise clearance cannot climb back to an altitude after verbally reporting leaving it for a lower one without additional clearance.
Confusing NOTAMs, such as those prohibiting "straight-in" approaches at night, should be interpreted strictly as disallowing straight-in minimums; however, descending to circling minimums and then making a landing is permissible, though caution is advised due to potential unlit obstructions.
I’ve certainly enjoyed your magazine for some time now, but with the March article, “Random Holds” by Mark Kolber, I was a little surprised he did not mention the use of the OBS function on the GNS 4xx and 5xx Garmin navigators with regards to creating a random hold.
