Key Takeaways:

  • The Icon A5 is a stylish, carbon-fiber amphibious light-sport aircraft designed as a recreational "flying toy" for the outdoor market, prioritizing ease of use, safety, and an appealing aesthetic.
  • The reviewer found the A5 surprisingly stable and intuitive to fly, highlighting its effective Angle of Attack (AOA) indicator and advanced spin-resistant design, which allows for safe control even at stall.
  • With features like folding wings and a simplified, car-like cockpit, the A5 is designed to be accessible to both experienced pilots and non-pilots, supported by comprehensive training programs, despite its increased price point of $247,000.

I’m generally biased in favor of anything that flies, but truth be told there have been a few light-sport aircraft that I haven’t enjoyed flying. I felt that those airplanes were so light on the controls that it was rather unsettling. While the Icon A5 looks cool, I was prepared for the worst when I went to fly the two-seat amphibian. Boy, was I in for a surprise.
