Icon A5 Light-Sport Aircraft Review

Icon A5 Flying Magazine
Gemini Sparkle

Key Takeaways:

  • The Icon A5 is a stylish, two-seat, carbon-fiber amphibious light-sport aircraft designed as a "flying toy" for recreation, featuring folding wings for easy transport and a strong emphasis on user-friendly design and accessibility for new pilots.
  • Despite initial skepticism, the author found the A5 surprisingly stable, intuitive to fly, and notably spin-resistant, highlighting its innovative angle of attack (AOA) indicator and simplified cockpit that make it forgiving and easy to control.
  • Icon offers extensive training programs, including for non-pilots, but faces challenges with the aircraft's limited useful load and a final price of $247,000, which is significantly higher than initially projected.

I’m generally biased in favor of anything that flies, but truth be told there have been a few light-sport aircraft that I haven’t enjoyed flying. I felt that those airplanes were so light on the controls that it was rather unsettling. While the Icon A5 looks cool, I was prepared for the worst when I went to fly the two-seat amphibian. Boy, was I in for a surprise.
