A Cirrus SR22 aircraft crashed early Saturday morning near Springfield-Branson National Airport in southwestern Missouri, killing all five occupants (two adults and three children).
Witnesses reported hearing engine trouble immediately before the crash, after which the aircraft was engulfed in flames.
The NTSB is investigating multiple factors, including why the presumed four-seat aircraft was carrying five passengers and if its ballistic recovery system was attempted.
The 44-year-old instrument-rated pilot was flying in overcast skies with light rain.
