Key Takeaways:

  • Bye Aerospace is pursuing certification for its all-electric Sun Flyer 2 and 4 aircraft, aiming to be the first U.S. company to do so, with 220 combined deposits already secured.
  • The Sun Flyer 2 is designed to significantly reduce flight training costs to as little as $3 per hour for electricity, addressing the pilot shortage and the issue of an aging training fleet.
  • Both Sun Flyer models feature advanced electric powerplants, sleek aerodynamic designs, and lightweight construction, offering benefits like reduced drag, quiet operation, zero emissions, and up to 3.5-4 hours of flight range for various applications including air taxi services.

Bye Aerospace might just become the first U.S. company to certify an all-electric airplane in the normal category under Part 23 if the targeted mid- to late 2020 deadline holds to earn agency approval of the two-place Sun Flyer 2 and the four-place Sun Flyer 4. But Bye Aerospace’s reason to keep moving forward toward certification is not necessarily driven by a need to win an award as the industry’s first, as much as the need to get the new planes out into the business world. CEO George Bye said the company holds 220 combined deposits for the Sun Flyer 2 and the Sun Flyer 4.
