Key Takeaways:

  • The article introduces "essence" as a comprehensive term for all forms of energy available in an aircraft (chemical, kinetic, potential), noting that some forms can vanish, unlike traditional energy.
  • Pilots are crucial in transforming these various forms of essence during flight maneuvers, converting one into another (e.g., trading airspeed for altitude).
  • The concept of "essence" extends to the pilot's own mental and physical state, emphasizing that maintaining sufficient "pilot essence" (e.g., avoiding fatigue or hunger) is as critical for safety as managing the aircraft's fuel.
  • Understanding "essence" provides a clearer framework for flight dynamics, resolving debates like the pitch/power conundrum and guiding pilots in effectively managing the aircraft's energy state during all phases of flight.

While visiting France a few years ago, I found an Aero Club that would let me fly with one of their pilots. At the club I was introduced to M. Bus, a retired businessman. My French was barely better than his English, but we spoke the common language of aviation. The airplane was a Piper Archer, examples of which I’ve flown all over the U.S., and the preflight went smoothly until we checked the fuel level. You’re probably familiar with the small metal “tab” in many fuel tanks indicating a partial fuel level. This Archer’s fuel level was well below the tabs.

“That’s not enough fuel,” I said. In French, “fuel” is “essence.”
