Key Takeaways:

  • The U.S. federal government has implemented a temporary flight restriction (TFR) for drones along the entire U.S.-Mexico border, effective until October 2027, to combat illicit cartel activity and other threats.
  • The TFR prohibits unauthorized drone operations within 1 nm and up to 400 feet of the border, with military forces explicitly authorized to use advanced technologies, including directed energy weapons, to shoot down violating drones.
  • This measure is part of a broader federal effort to counter increasing unauthorized drone activity, with significant investments in counter-UAS initiatives and recent reports of hundreds of drone interceptions by federal task forces along the southern border.

According to the U.S. Transportation Department, a temporary flight restriction (TFR) took effect Friday and prohibits unauthorized uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) operations within 1 nm of the southern border, from the surface up to 400 feet. DOT said the TFR was coordinated jointly with the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense.
