Key Takeaways:

  • Garmin's Autoland system, the world's first certified autonomous emergency landing technology, is now equipped on over 2,500 aircraft since its certification in May 2020.
  • The system activates during emergencies like pilot incapacitation, autonomously taking full control to analyze data, choose the safest landing site, communicate with ATC, and execute a complete landing.
  • Available on 15 diverse aircraft models, including piston, turboprop, and twin-engine jets, the technology has successfully performed one real-world emergency landing and is set for further expansion to more models.

Integrated flight deck provider Garmin said Wednesday that its Autoland system is now equipped on more than 2,500 aircraft, marking a new milestone for the technology that was initially certified less than seven years ago in May 2020.

The Robert J. Collier Trophy-winning technology is the world’s first certified autonomous system designed to activate during an emergency to control and land an aircraft without human intervention.
