The FAA announced a new policy in February 2014 to simplify design and production approval for supplemental Angle-of-Attack (AoA) indicators in general aviation aircraft, aiming to prevent loss-of-control accidents.
This policy requires manufacturers to adhere to an ASTM standard but specifically applies to non-required AoA systems and notably does not streamline the procedures for installing these indicators in personal aircraft.
While a positive development, the policy's announcement coincided with Congressional hearings scrutinizing FAA regulations, suggesting potential external pressure for this overdue regulatory simplification.
