One of the year-end rituals in which most of us engage is looking back on what was and thinking of ways we can make improvements during the next 365 days. Although the official NTSB statistics aren’t yet available, there’s enough available evidence to say certain civil aviation segments are wrapping up a pretty good year. Others, not so much.
Commercial aviation experienced one of its safest years ever in 2011, noting a record period without a fatal airliner accident worldwide.
Conversely, non-commercial aviation, specifically U.S. fixed-wing business aircraft operators, saw a decline in safety in 2011 with an increase in accidents.
Overall U.S. aviation fatalities decreased in 2010 compared to 2009, but general aviation remained the largest contributor to these numbers, with 2011 only expected to be slightly better.
