I enjoyed reading “Wrong Airport, Wrong Runway” by Mike Hart in your January 2014 issue and appreciate his stressing the use of data to overcome errors and biases. One tool I find useful when approaching an airport with two runways pointing in similar directions is my direction indicator, HSI or not.
Pilots can prevent landing on the wrong runway by actively using navigation tools like direction indicators (HSI) and ILS signals, especially in challenging conditions, and should not solely rely on automation.
To safely expand one's aviation experience, pilots should consciously introduce new challenges in only one dimension at a time after a thorough risk assessment.
This method for skill growth involves balancing a single new variable with otherwise familiar conditions, avoiding flights where multiple unfamiliar factors are present.
