Hangar One, the historic 1933 airship hangar at Moffett Federal Airfield in California, has been successfully restored.
The hangar had become contaminated with toxic materials like PCBs and asbestos from its original construction, leading to environmental concerns and a proposed demolition by the Navy.
Public advocacy led to Google Planetary Ventures leasing the property in 2015 and undertaking the restoration using environmentally safer materials, preserving it as a significant Bay Area landmark.
Hangar One, the airship hangar at Moffett Federal Airfield (KNUQ) in Santa Clara County, California, has been restored. The hangar was built in 1933 to house the USSMacon, a 146-foot-tall and 785-foot-long dirigible operated by the U.S. Navy. The building dominates the landscape of the airport that lies on the south end of San Francisco Bay.
