Key Takeaways:

  • The Piper J-3 Cub is considered the "original general aviation airplane," evolving from C.G. Taylor's design and refined by Walter Jamouneau under William T. Piper, becoming a bestseller and essential trainer during WWII.
  • After a period of obsolescence and low prices in the 1970s, the J-3 Cub has experienced a significant market resurgence, with prices appreciating as pilots seek out vintage aircraft for nostalgic or backcountry flying.
  • The J-3 Cub offers a unique flying experience, demanding coordinated rudder input due to adverse yaw, and rewarding patient pilots with harmonious, intuitive, and forgiving handling, especially in its original low-power configurations.

Piper’s J-3 Cub, which many pilots and pedestrians alike consider the original general aviation airplane, has come full circle in the aircraft market

A bestseller during its decade of production starting in 1937, the J-3 eventually withdrew as others, including newer Piper models, took over its many roles from basic trainer and personal aircraft to military observation and liaison vehicle. While it arguably never quite went out of style, the Cub certainly suffered the indignities of obsolescence.
