Key Takeaways:

  • Rainier Flight Service (RFS), the Puget Sound's largest flight school, has moved its main operations to King County International Airport-Boeing Field (KBFI) due to unsustainable costs at its previous Renton Airport location.
  • KBFI allocated 12 tie-downs and other facilities to RFS, prioritizing the commercial flight school which angered over 100 individuals on the airport's tie-down waitlist.
  • King County and AOPA defend the decision, stating it aligns with FAA policy for the "best and highest use" of airport property, particularly to maintain flight training services in the region after the recent closure of Galvin Flying.

Rainier Flight Service (RFS), the largest flight school in the Puget Sound region in Washington state, now has an operation at King County International Airport-Boeing Field (KBFI).

RFS is positioning 12 aircraft at KBFI in tie-downs located on the southwest side of the airport, and school officials report they are also in pursuit of a small hangar to conduct maintenance operations and pilot briefs.
