Key Takeaways:

Thanksgiving has been a tradition in space since 1973, with annual celebrations on the International Space Station (ISS) since 2000, fostering a sense of family among crewmembers.
The celebratory meals have evolved over time, starting with no turkey on Skylab 4, to featuring specially prepared and reheated dishes like turkey, ham, various sides, and desserts on later missions.
The number of astronauts celebrating Thanksgiving in orbit has grown significantly, setting records for multinational gatherings across multiple spacecraft.

Living and working 250 miles above the Earth, International Space Station (ISS) astronauts do not have the luxury of spending Thanksgiving with their families. But on the ISS, crewmembers are family.

Space station crews have celebrated Thanksgiving from orbit every November since 2000. Last year, for example, the Expedition 70 crew chowed down on turkey, duck, quail, seafood, and cranberry sauce—with chocolate, mochi, and even pumpkin spice cappuccinos for dessert.
