Piston and turbine aircraft in the 6,000- to 12,500-pound category (FAA Class III) are now eligible to retrofit their steam gauge panels with Aspen Avionics’ Evolution EFD1000C3 Pro Primary Flight Display (PFD). Aspen president John Uczekaj said many operators of Class III aircraft will also install companion Evolution Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) to complement the PFDs. Among the first aircraft types to be added to the Aspen Approve Model List (AML) are Piper Navajo piston twins and Cheyenne turboprop twins; most Beech King Air models, Twin Commanders and members of the Cessna 400 Series twin family. In all, the Aspen AML includes more than 900 models of Class I, II and now III fixed wing aircraft. Besides its low acquisition cost of $12,995 (with an introductory price of $10,995 through the end of October) the Aspen Evolution PFD promises greater durability and performance accuracy coupled with lower maintenance and repair costs when compared with traditional mechanical gyro instruments.
