Key Takeaways:

  • An experienced pilot chronicles his multi-decade journey through airplane ownership, driven by evolving missions from family transport to recreational flying and comfortable two-person travel.
  • His first plane, a Piper Cherokee Six, proved costly due to significant maintenance issues, particularly an engine overhaul, leading to its eventual sale after five years.
  • He then pursued a "fun" Decathlon taildragger, which provided simple flying pleasure but was sold when his wife desired a more comfortable aircraft for joint flights.
  • The author's current aircraft, a Piper Arrow, was acquired after overcoming challenges like a disappointing pre-buy for an alternative and resolving damage history, finally meeting their desired mission.

Not quite 10 years ago, I took the plunge into the abyss of airplane ownership. Having a civilian background in a general aviation environment, and possessing a pilot’s license for more than four decades, it seems that airplane ownership would have long ago been part of my repertoire. Finances, career focus, and other life interests had taken priority. Belonging to a South Florida flying club was the closest I had come. Sometimes, just the dream of ownership was more entertaining than reality.
