Key Takeaways:

  • The FAA has extended the Remote ID compliance deadline for drone pilots by six months, from September 16 to March 16, 2024.
  • Remote ID functions as a "digital license plate," broadcasting identification and location information to help authorities monitor drone safety.
  • The extension was issued because drone operators encountered difficulties in locating Remote ID broadcast modules required for compliance.
  • Drone pilots must comply by purchasing a Remote ID-equipped drone or an attachable module, as non-compliance can result in fines or certificate revocation.

What Is Remote ID?

According to the FAA, Remote ID “acts like a digital license plate and will help the FAA, law enforcement, and other federal agencies find the control station when a drone appears to be flying in an unsafe manner or where it is not allowed to fly.”
