The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating an incident at John F. Kennedy International Airport that happened Friday night when a Boeing 777 taxied in front of a departing Boeing 737-900.
A Delta Air Lines flight at JFK Airport aborted its takeoff after an American Airlines plane taxied onto its active runway.
Air traffic controllers intervened, canceling the Delta flight's takeoff, which stopped safely approximately 1,000 feet before the crossing point.
The FAA and NTSB are investigating the incident, which occurred despite JFK being equipped with ASDE-X technology designed to prevent runway conflicts.
The near-collision brings to mind the 1977 Tenerife disaster, the deadliest aviation accident, highlighting the critical importance of preventing runway incursions.
