Key Takeaways:

  • The Jetson One is a "build-your-own" recreational eVTOL aircraft that does not require a pilot's certificate to operate.
  • It has sold out its 2022 production and accumulated thousands of pre-orders for the next year, priced at $90,000 with some assembly required.
  • The 190-pound eVTOL demonstrated its capabilities in a recent video, flying over water, and offers a top speed of 63 mph with a 20-minute flight time.
  • Jetson aims to "democratise flight" by providing commercially available personal electric vehicles and hints at future projects for urban air mobility.

Jetson’s build-your-own eVTOL aircraft, Jetson One, flew over water in a recent video demonstration.

The Swedish startup says its “flying motorcycle” has already sold out of its entire 2022 production, with thousands of pre-orders waiting for next year. Categorized as a recreational aircraft, the Jetson One is one of the only eVTOL’s that doesn’t require a pilot’s certificate to operate.

“The Jetson ethos is all about beautifully simple solutions to air mobility and transportation. The Jetson One is our answer to fun and recreational flight,” said Jetson president and co-founder Peter Ternström.

In its latest video, the Jetson One can be seen flying over a golf course, and even down a long water hazard. The 190-pound aircraft has a top speed of 63 mph and can fly for approximately 20 minutes on a single charge.

Jetson co-founder Tomasz Patan hinted that the Jetson One may not be the only project the company is working on.

“I am often imagining a not too distant future where you would have a compact, car-like aerial vehicle transporting you across the big city in minutes instead of hours—this is an idea worth spending a large part of my life working on,” he said.

According to Jetson, it is the only eVTOL company that can currently provide a commercially available personal electronic vehicle—hoping to further its mission to “democratise flight.”

“The Jetson ethos is all about beautifully simple solutions to air mobility and transportation. The Jetson ONE is our answer to fun and recreational flight,” Ternström said.

The Jetson One is currently available for $90,000, with some assembly required. The eVTOL is constructed of a lightweight aluminum space frame and carbon-kevlar composite body. Its eight motors, powered by Tesla batteries, can carry a maximum pilot weight of 210 pounds.

“It takes just a few seconds to fold the Jetson One to 90cm width configuration. The one has been designed with real life practicality in mind. No other eVTOL offers this kind of ease of transport and storage convenience,” Tomasz said.
