Key Takeaways:

  • The 53rd Reno National Championship Air Races featured a dramatic incident where Thom Richard's Formula One plane, "Hot Stuff," was struck from behind by another racer during takeoff after Richard had signaled engine trouble.
  • Despite suffering an injured hand and significant damage to his aircraft, Richard remained calm and expressed his unwavering commitment to continue air racing, weighing the risks against the rewards.
  • The event highlighted a trend of declining participation in the Unlimited Class due to the high cost and risk of operating the planes, contrasting with strong attendance in Formula One, Sport, and Jet classes.

As is generally the case, there was much excitement this weekend in Reno as the National Championship Air Races celebrated its 53rd year of races around closed pylon courses in the beautiful desert landscape north of the Reno-Stead Airport. However, unlike most years, this year’s greatest thrill did not come from the Unlimited Class.
