Key Takeaways:

  • The U.S. air traffic control (ATC) system is uniquely flexible and accommodating, capable of efficiently handling diverse aircraft types and speeds simultaneously, a stark contrast to more restrictive systems found in other countries.
  • This efficiency is coupled with a strong partnership approach, where controllers demonstrate remarkable courtesy, patience, and proactive engagement with general aviation pilots.
  • The U.S. ATC system is an "unsung hero" and general aviation's best friend, vital for connecting rural communities and supporting local economies.
  • The article advocates for preserving the current service-oriented culture of U.S. ATC, warning against changes that could compromise its effectiveness due to a profit motive.

Eight of us had flown into Borrego Springs, California, for lunch. As Martha and I helped the folks from Australia back into the airplane and gave them our preflight briefing for the return trip, I explained, “We are about to challenge the air traffic control system a bit. We will pop up in this small jet and accelerate to 350 knots indicated airspeed. We will then request an ILS clearance for landing at Montgomery Field in San Diego, and see how ATC handles it.”

Today, the school operates out of a dedicated complex in San Diego, California, that includes a video and software production facility. John and Martha have shared flying and teaching aviation for more than 50 years.
