US Air Force Announces New Mission Statement

The new mission statement will focus the 689,000 men and women on the service’s core goals. US Air Force

Ask most people about the mission of the US Air Force and they’ll probably mention something about protecting the nation by flying jets around or something equally vague. In existence since its formation from the old US Army Air Corps in the fall of 1947, this branch of the US military—supporting more than 689,000 men and women—recently announced an update to its mission statement to better focus the service on the jobs at hand. The new mission statement is succinct and to the point: “To Fly, Fight and Win…Airpower Anytime, Anywhere.”

The Air Force said in a news release, “This change emphasizes the primary competitive advantage and capabilities airpower provides to the nation and joint operations. The ability to fight and win with airpower is key to facing emerging competitors and near-peer adversaries.” The previous mission statement released in 2005 said the USAF existed to “deliver sovereign options for the defense of the Unites States of America and its global interests—to fly and fight in Air, Space and Cyberspace.” The release added, “Since the domain of space falls under the Space Force, the Air Force can now focus solely on airpower and maintain a sustained focus on core air domain missions.”

“As the new mission statement was formulated, it was important to all of us that all Airmen see where they fit,” said Chief Master Sgt of the Air Force JoAnne S Bass. “Every airman, from every career field is directly responsible for delivering, supporting, launching and driving airpower which is the culmination of our diverse specialties, expertise and capabilities that make up our great Air Force.”
