Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos was killed yesterday in the crash of a Cessna Citation XL in Santo, Brazil, shocking supporters as October’s elections approach.
Reports say the crew aborted a landing in poor weather after a flight from Rio de Janeiro. They were attempting to head for an alternate when the crash occurred about 35 miles from Sao Paulo. All seven aboard the jet died, including the pilots, a reporter, a photographer and two campaign aides.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the leftist politician, 49, who hailed from an influential political family, died on the anniversary of the death of his grandfather, Miguel Arraes, a former governor and major figure in the opposition to Brazil’s dictatorship in the 1960s and 1970s.
