April 3, 2012, Mesa, Ariz., Rans S-12 Experimental

At about 0742 Mountain time, the airplane impacted terrain shortly after takeoff. The commercial pilot and non-certificated pilot/owner were fatally injured. The airplane was substantially damaged. Visual conditions prevailed. Witnesses reported they heard the engine lose partial power when it was about 200-300 feet agl. The airplane made a sharp right-hand turn, which appeared to the witnesses as if the pilot was attempting to return to the airport, and the airplane’s nose suddenly dropped.

July 1, 2011, Toledo, Ohio, RANS S-17 Experimental

At about 1930 Eastern time, the experimental amateur-built aircraft sustained substantial damage when it impacted terrain following loss of directional control during takeoff. The private pilot was not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. It was the pilots first flight in the airplane since purchasing it.

December 2, 2010, St. Augustine, Fla., RANS S6ES Experimental

The airplane was substantially damaged during a forced landing at 1522 Eastern time. The solo airline transport pilot incurred minor injuries. Visual conditions prevailed. The accident flight was the first after the airplanes engine was removed and replaced with a used Rotax 912 ULS. After an extended engine run-up, the airplane took off.

May 05, 2004, Cumming, GA / RANS S-12XL

The unregistered Experimental, flown by a noncertificated pilot, collided with power lines and trees during a nighttime low pass down Runway 21 at Mathis Airport in Cumming, Ga. The flight departed Mountain Airport, Cleveland, Ga., at 2015 local time. The unlighted runway was illuminated with car headlights. The airplane passed over the runway twice and on the third low pass was observed to almost hit the airports wind sock. Banking left in a northeast direction to avoid the windsock, the airplane appeared to stall and witnesses lost sight of it….

February 10, Homestead, Fla. / Rans S-12

At 10:09 eastern time, an amateur-built Rans S-12 crashed while attempting to takeoff from a plowed farm field in Homestead. The pilot sustained serious injuries and the passenger was not injured. The passenger, the pilots wife, said they had originally taken off from Homestead Regional Dade County Airport and shortly after takeoff, the airplane lost power and the pilot landed in the plowed field. The pilot examined the engine and felt that he could take off. During the takeoff, the engine again lost power and the airplane crashed nose down in the field….
