At 15:18 mountain time, a Piper PA-28-161 lost power and collided with objects on the ground during the ensuing forced landing about four miles northwest of Ernest A. Love Field Airport. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The pilot was flying from Mariposa, Calif., to Mesa, Ariz., with a fuel stop in Prescott. He calculated the leg to Prescott would take 4 hours 15 minutes. When he arrived in the area, the pilot informed the Prescott tower he was low on fuel. About five minutes later, he informed the tower that he was out of fuel. At about 23:23 eastern time, a Piper PA-28-161 lost engine power on approach to Winchester Regional Airport and was damaged in the ensuing forced landing. The pilot was not injured. The pilot estimated the airplane had a full-tanks endurance of 4.5 hours, but after three hours aloft the left fuel gauge read E and the right fuel gauge indicated . He attempted to land in Martinsburg, W.Va., but could not activate the pilot-controlled lighting, so he continued to his destination. The engine failed while on a 1-mile final for runway 14. At about 17:30 eastern time, a Piper PA-28-161 struck trees during departure from Horace Williams Airport. The flight instructor and instrument student were not injured. The flight instructor said the engine sputtered and began to lose power at 100 to 200 feet agl. May 16, Port Columbus, Ohio / Piper Warrior

At 0315 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-28-151 was damaged during a forced landing to Interstate 70 in Port Columbus. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The pilot had flown from Columbus, Ohio, to Utica, N.Y., the day before and had used about 33 gallons to make the trip. The topped the fuel tanks with 48 gallons usable for the return trip. His weather briefing called for winds of 15 to 17 knots, but the actual winds aloft were about 36 knots, peaking at 50 knots. The airplane ran out of fuel about 10 miles from its destination. The pilot had gotten his private certificate about five weeks earlier….

February 23, Atlantic City, N.J. / Piper Warrior

At about 1335 eastern time, a Piper PA-28-161 overran the runway at Bader Field, damaging the airplane but leaving the pilot and two passengers uninjured. The pilot said he touched down with about 2/3rds of the 2,948-foot runway remaining, but then the wind caught the plane and started to push it off the runway. He tried to take off, but the airplane struck vegetation and came to rest in the water. A witness stated the landing was the pilots second attempt. The airplane touched down at taxiway B, about 2,000 feet beyond the approach end of runway 29. The airplane then veered off the right side of the runway and into the weeds. At 1108 eastern time, a Piper PA-28-151 struck trees on climbout from Herbert Smart Airport, killing the pilot and flight instructor. A witness reported the CFI and pilot were on an instrument training flight in the local area. They departed runway 28, climbed to approximately 300 feet and reported that they were going to return to the airport to land on runway 10.
