The commercial pilot, sole occupant of the airplane, sustained minor injuries. Visual conditions prevailed. Witnesses observed the airplane take off and heard the engine sputtering.

At about 1010 Mountain time, the airplanes pilot executed a forced landing following a loss of engine power. The solo student pilot was not injured; the airplane sustained substantial damage to its left wing. Visual conditions prevailed. After a seventh touch-and-go, and on the upwind leg after reaching 400-500 feet agl, the engine quit. The student attempted to restart the engine but was unsuccessful. During the forced landing onto a dirt field the outboard section of the left wing was damaged.

At about 1000 Pacific, the airplane veered off the runway and encountered a ditch while landing. The Private pilot was not injured; the airplane sustained substantial damage. Visual conditions prevailed. The pilot subsequently reported observing the windsock, which looked limp. He entered right traffic for Runway 27, noting mountainous terrain. After two rejected landing attempts, he felt that he could land in the first third of the runway.

The aircraft was substantially damaged, and the flight instructor and Student pilot aboard seriously injured when it collided with terrain while maneuvering for landing at 1237 Pacific time. Visual conditions prevailed. Witnesses reported that the aircraft had been doing touch-and-go landings to Runway 17. The aircraft was observed to pass over a building near the runway, pitch up and appeared to make a hard banking turn to the left before stalling. The nearest weather observing facility reported wind from 150 degrees at 19 knots at the time of the accident….

At 20:00 PST, a Piper PA-38-112 lost power and was damaged landing on a country road near Kern Valley Airport. The two occupants were not injured. The flight had originated from Las Vegas at 16:00 and was scheduled to terminate at Fresno, Calif. The pilot said he planned to stop for fuel at Inyokern, Calif. The pilot reported that approximately 45 minutes into the flight his passenger became agitated and wanted to land. He diverted to Trona, Calif., approximately 25 miles from Inyokern, to take care of his passenger. At 07:30 EST, a Piper PA-38-112 lost power near Alma and was damaged in the ensuing forced landing. The pilot reported minor injuries. The airplane had departed the Chippewa County International Airport at about 05:05 and was en route to Alma. The pilot said he had flown from Alma to Chippewa County the previous day and did not refuel the aircraft prior to the accident flight. The pilot admitted to investigators that he did not calculate total fuel consumption for the trip. At 13:00 Pacific time, a Piper PA-38-112 lost power while conducting a go-around after a simulated engine-out procedure at the Selma Airport. The airplane crashed in a vineyard, but the student and flight instructor were not injured. The instructor told investigators company procedure called for switching to the fullest tank prior to takeoff after a touch-and-go. On the touch-and-go takeoff, the fuel tank was switched and the engine quit at 200 feet agl. The CFI took control and made an unsuccessful attempt to restart the engine. At about 13:45 central time, a Piper PA-38-112 struck trees after landing at Hopper Field. The flight instructor was seriously injured and the student pilot reported no injuries. The airport manager, who witnessed the accident, said the airplane was high and fast on the approach to the 1,400-foot-long runway 36. At about 18:30 eastern time, a Piper PA-38-112 crashed after losing power immediately after takeoff from North Central Airport. The flight instructor received minor injuries and the student pilot was not injured. As the airplane was climbing through 75 feet, the engine began to sputter. Climbing through 100 feet, the engine lost all power. The CFI turned the airplane toward the airport but could not make the runway. He stalled the airplane into the treetops. The airplane came to rest, suspended by the tree limbs about 20 feet above the ground. Post-accident investigation found no fuel in the mechanical fuel pump, gascolator, and carburetor….
