December 16, 2007, Bridger, Mon., Piper PA-30

The airplane sustained substantial damage following a landing gear collapse during the landing roll at 1248 Mountain time. The private pilot was not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. According to the pilot, he approached the airport and attempted to extend the landing gear, which did not extend. He then reset the circuit breaker and extended the gear, confirming with a green light. The airplane touched down and, approximately 50 yards down the runway, the landing gear collapsed. This event was upgraded to an accident after an FAA inspector verified structural damage on the underside of the fuselage.

November 4, 2007, Tuscaloosa, Ala., Piper PA-31-350

While taxiing slowly in reduced visibility, on the taxiway centerline and using the taxi and landing lights, the pilot noticed a parked airplane to his right and applied brakes. The airplane yawed to the left and its right wing collided with the left side of the fuselage of a parked Cessna Citation. The pilot stopped the airplane, notified ground control that he had collided with another airplane and shut down.

November 6, 2007, Durbin, W.V., Piper PA-18-135

The airplane was substantially damaged during a forced landing at 1253 Eastern time. The commercial pilot was not injured; visual conditions prevailed. During a repositioning flight, the pilot noticed oil coming out of the engine. He decided to perform a forced landing to a field, during which the airplane impacted a tree, substantially damaging the right wing and fuselage. Examination revealed the engine crankshaft oil seal was partially dislodged, and protruding from the front of the engine case.

November 9, 2007, McFarland, Calif., Piper PA-60-602P Aerostar

At about 1200 Pacific time, the airplane collided with terrain in a citrus grove during an attempted emergency landing. The private pilot and two passengers sustained fatal injuries; the airplane was destroyed. Visual conditions prevailed. A review of the communications reveals the pilot requested to divert to Bakersfield, Calif., for a “fuel stop.” At 1127, the airplane began a descent from FL210. At 1155, the ATC tower at Bakersfield received a radio call from the airplane, declaring an emergency due to engine problems. Witnesses near the accident site observed the airplane flying southbound, with the wings rocking side to side, until the airplane rolled to the right before impacting the citrus grove.

November 10, 2007, Sacramento, Ky., Piper PA-28-151

The airplane was substantially damaged at about 1600 Eastern time during a forced landing following a total loss of engine power. The solo private pilot was not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. The pilot subsequently reported was ferrying the airplane back to his home airport after an annual inspection. After an uneventful takeoff, and at about 60 feet agl, the engine lost all power. The pilot subsequently performed a forced landing to a field. During the landing, the nose gear and firewall sustained substantial damage. The pilot further stated he thought the fuel selector was positioned to the right main fuel tank during takeoff, and that he moved the fuel selector to “OFF” after the forced landing.

November 12, 2007, Salt Lake City, Utah, Piper PA-31-350

The airplane was landed gear-up at about 0850 Mountain time. The commercial pilot, who was the sole occupant, was not injured. However, the aircraft sustained substantial damage. Visual conditions prevailed. The pilot subsequently reported he was initially inbound for landing on Runway 32, which was changed to Runway 35. He stated he felt “rushed” by ATC due to aircraft sequencing while he set the flaps, lowered the landing gear and set the propellers in no certain sequence. The pilot added that he did not verify their positions prior to landing. Subsequently, the aircraft landed gear-up.

October 3, 2007, Grand Forks, N.D., Piper PA28-161

The aircraft was substantially damaged while exiting the runway after landing. The first-solo student pilot reported the tower controller requested the pilot exit at taxiway A2. The pilot reported that while he tried to comply with towers request, the airplane was still at 20-30 knots. The aircraft went off the runway into the grass and its left wing impacted the runway hold-short sign. There were no injuries. The pilot reported no mechanical malfunction.

September 30, 2007, Taos, N.M., Piper PA-28R-201T

During an attempted return to the departure point in response to an in-flight fire, the airplanes engine lost power and the pilot subsequently performed a wheels-up landing at approximately 0830 Mountain time in rough terrain one mile south of the airport. The airplane was destroyed. Visual conditions prevailed. The private pilot and passenger were not injured. The flight originated at 0815.

September 1, 2007, Modesto, Calif., Piper PA-22-150

The airplane was destroyed by fire after landing about 1748 Pacific time. Visual conditions prevailed. The private pilot received minor injuries; the passenger received serious injuries. The pilot later reported that within minutes following takeoff on the two flights preceding the accident flight, he had experienced smoke in the cockpit and promptly landed. The accident flight followed repairs to his airplane.
