The airplane collided with the ground shortly after takeoff at about 1225 Eastern time. The solo private pilot was fatally injured. The airplane came to rest on airport property and was substantially damaged. Visual conditions prevailed. The pilot had a gear-up landing accident with the same airplane on April 11, 2011.

November 1, 2007, Panama City, Fla., Mooney M20K

At 1406 Central time, the private pilot reported engine failure and ditched one mile off Panama City Beach, Fla. Visual conditions prevailed. The airplane was substantially damaged; the pilot was fatally injured and his passenger received minor injuries. According to the pilots mechanic, the pilot contacted him at approximately 1219, and requested that he prepare his airplane for a short flight. Over the next 1.5 hours, the pilot, his mechanic and line personnel experienced difficulties involving a dead battery, underinflated tires and substantial amounts of water in its fuel tanks. The pilot arrived at the airport and, after another jump start of the airplane, boarded along with his passenger. The head lineman jumped the airplane again and the engine started.

January 5, 2006, Hillsboro, Ore. / Mooney M20K

The airplane was destroyed when it impacted terrain during an attempted forced landing at approximately 1055 Pacific time. The Instrument-rated Private pilot was fatally injured. Visual conditions prevailed. The pilot was executing a practice ILS approach to Runway 12. As the airplane approached the airport, at approximately 3.5 nm, the pilot told ATC that the airplane was loosing power and that he was going to land on a grass airfield. Several residences of the Sunset Air Strip, North Plains, Oregon, reported hearing a loud noise; subsequently they found the airplane adjacent to one of their taxiways….

March 16, Los Angeles, Calif. / Mooney 231

At about 1703 Pacific time, a Mooney M20K crashed into a residence 0.53 nm south-southeast of the Santa Monica Municipal Airport. The airplane was destroyed and the two private pilots aboard were fatally injured. Weather at the time of the accident included visibility of 1/2 mile in mist and an overcast ceiling at 200 feet. The flight was cleared for a VOR approach and subsequently advised that it was going around. Instead of executing a missed approach procedure, the airplane never departed the area. Several witnesses reported hearing the airplane flying over the area. In summary, the auditory witnesses indicated that the airplanes noise sounded like it was circling over the area….

At 2153 mountain time, a Mooney M20K struck the ground while landing at Colorado Springs Municipal Airport. The pilot and two passengers sustained minor injuries. The pilot attempted to land on runway 35R with a 90-degree, 15-knot crosswind from the right but the airplane drifted to the left and he was worried about striking the wing on the runway. He added full power to go around, but the engine hesitated abnormally and the airplane continued to descend. He then raised the landing gear and the flaps and shut off the fuel flow. At about 2040 eastern time, a Mooney M20K suffered an apparent nose gear problem and was damaged during landing at Greenwood Lake Airport. The pilot received minor injuries. The pilot said he had transported another pilot to Stewart International Airport to pick up another airplane. At the landing at Stewart, he detected a nosewheel shimmy. The two pilots examined the nose gear but could find no anomalies. The two then departed in separate airplanes for the return flight. The pilot said that, after he touched down, the nose of the airplane veered to the right. At about 1115 mountain time, a Mooney 252 lost engine power and was damaged in a forced landing at Eagle County Airport. The two occupants were not injured. The pilot said the airplane had lifted off and climbed to 50 feet when the engine lost power. He attempted to land on the 2,000 feet of runway remaining, but the airplane slid off the icy runway, traveled across a 600-foot overrun, and collided with a ditch. At 0830 central time, a Mooney M20K struck trees during a go-around at Birdwin Airport. The pilot and three passengers were not injured. The pilot said he overflew the 2,200-foot turf runway 03 prior to landing and noticed no hazards or standing water. He made the second approach and landed, but the airplane was not slowing down. With heavy braking the airplane started to skid. The pilot abandoned the landing and applied full power. During initial climb the left wing struck a bush. At approximately 1300 mountain time, a Mooney M20K struck a fence during a runway overrun after landing at Madison County Airport. The pilot and three passengers were not injured. The pilot said he landed long and fast and was unable to get the aircraft stopped by the time it reached the end of the 4,200-foot runway. As the airplane approached a fence past the departure end of the runway, the pilot attempted to make it the airplane hop over the fence. The aircrafts landing gear caught on the fence. The pilot reported no pre-accident mechanical anomalies….

At about 12:30 EST, a Mooney 231 crashed into mountains near Counts, killing the pilot. A witness stated that he had intended to buy the accident airplane from the pilots corporation. The pilot flew the airplane to Mooresville, N.C., the day before the accident for a pre-purchase inspection. The inspection found numerous discrepancies, including the fuel flow being too high, the right magneto inoperative, low pressure on two engine cylinders, two exhaust manifolds leaking, various oil leaks, an inaccurate fuel gauge, a spongy left brake, and the left forward engine mount rusted.
