Joby Aviation is delaying the commercial service launch of its electric vertical take-off and landing services until 2025, in part because of regulatory hurdles, the company’s founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt said Thursday.

The airline’s unionized pilot group, which is part of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), said that 96 percent of the pilot group participated in the vote and that 99 percent voted in favor of strike authorization.

The ambitious timeline for eVTOL development is based on certification in 2024.

Beginning in New York and Los Angeles, Delta and Joby plan to integrate Joby’s services as a premium shuttle service to and from airports where Delta operates. This will run alongside Joby’s planned airport services, making the partnership mutually exclusive in the U.S. and the U.K. for half a decade after Joby’s commercial launch.
