Busting Loose

I own a Cessna 170 thats a great plane and has received a lot of attention of would-be buyers. I am not interested in selling the plane but have received a number of unsolicited inquiries. I believe some of that interest led to what turned out to be a new lesson for me in the value of a thorough pre-flight inspection.

My wife and I had decided to take a quick day trip to Wendover, Utah, for brunch and a little gambling. My airplane is kept at Salt Lake International Airport, where access is restricted through a gate with an electronic access code.

When we arrived, everything appeared to be in order. We began removing the tie downs, chocks and windshield cover and then I conducted my…

July 8, Westminster, Md. / Luscombe 8A

At 13:07 eastern time, a Luscombe 8A departed the runway during the takeoff run at Clearview Airpark and was damaged when it struck a hangar. The pilot and flight instructor were not injured. The owner said he had recently purchased the airplane and needed a tailwheel checkout. The instructor said the owners handling of the airplane and use of brakes led him to believe the owner could make the takeoff. After the start of the takeoff roll, the airplane initially drifted right, and departed the right side of the 30-foot-wide runway. However, after running parallel to the runway for about 200 feet, it then crossed over the runway to the left and continued for an additional 225 feet, heading ab…

June 24, Rock Hill, S.C. / Beech Skipper

At about 11:45 eastern time, a Beech 77 overran the runway and struck a ditch while landing at a private airstrip named County Squire Field. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The pilot said he was making his first flight into the grass airstrip. The flight touched down about a third of the way down the 2,700-foot-long runway but rolled about 100 feet before all three wheels were on the ground. He applied the brakes and the airplane skidded to the left, which he corrected back to the runway centerline. He thought about performing a go-around but didnt think the airplane would clear trees ahead. The airplane went into the ditch at about 20 mph. Winds at the departure airport five mile…

Jan. 15, Falmouth, Mass. / Piper Tri-Pacer

At 19:45 eastern time, a Piper PA-22-108 was last observed in the vicinity of Falmouth. The airplane has not been located and the pilot is presumed dead. The pilot contacted controllers at Norwood Mass., at about 16:00, asking for a special VFR departure clearance to the southwest. The controller observed what appeared to be up to 2 inches of slush and snow on the airplanes wings and control surfaces as well as ceilings of 400 feet and denied the clearance. The pilot departed runway 17 without a clearance and turned southwest along Interstate 95. The pilot reported clear of the airports class Delta airspace within five minutes. Over the next several hours, several witnesses saw the air…

The student pilot broadcast a simulated engine-out landing and turned toward the runway. However, a witness said the airplane appeared very slow and very, very low. He then saw the right wing drop and the airplane struck the ground in the clear area just short of runway 24. The instructor had more than 3,000 hours, and the second pilot had about 350 hours. No pre-accident anomalies were found….

Preliminary Reports

Jan. 19, Chillicothe, Ohio / Piper Mirage

At about 15:40 eastern time, a Piper PA-46-350P was damaged during an aborted takeoff from Ross County Airport. The three occupants were not injured. The three boarded in a heavy snowstorm and the pilot taxied the aircraft to the end of runway 23. There, both pilots used their cell phones to call Flight Service. Due to a disconnected phone call, it took about 45 minutes to file the IFR flight plan and receive a clearance. During the subsequent run-up, the pilot noticed about three to four inches of slush on the runway and about – to -inch of slush on the top of the wings. The two pilots agreed the debris would blow off during the takeoff run and elected not to clean the wings manually. Dur…

Turnback Technique

An excellent article on turnbacks [Airmanship, July]. John Eckalbar discusses this in detail in his books: Flying High Performance Singles and Twins, and Flying the Beech Bonanza. I attended the Bonanza Pilot Profiency Program in April and had the pleasure of hearing John speak in person. Part of the study material was a chapter on Turnbacks written by Eckalbar. Out of curiosity I later asked several members of a flying club I belong to about turnbacks, minimum altitude, optimum bank angle and optimum airspeed. I was surprised that many had no clue. I was shocked at how few had a plan for engine failure at low altitude.

The BPPP approach to the problem is similar to yours, they…
