ForeFlight, maker of the popular iPad electronic chart app, announced it has earned certification as an FAA Qualified Internet Communication Provider (QICP). The qualification allows private and commercial flight operations to use ForeFlight as their official source for weather information.

A small number of companies – including Jeppesen, WSI, XM WX, Universal Weather and a handful of others – hold the coveted QICP designation.

The FAA’s created its QICP certification process to allow weather data providers the ability to provide meteorological and notam data to pilots and operators over the internet. The QICP standards require that a provider’s servers meet a set of FAA-defined performance criteria. Foreflight’s web team collaborated with weather partner Weather Decision Technologies to meet the standard.
