On Tuesday afternoon, Cirrus Aircraft lifted the curtain on the latest evolution of its single-engine piston product line, the 2022 G6 SR Series. With aerodynamic enhancements that encompass the wings, tail, and wheel pants, the company reports that the new airplane will cruise up to 9 knots faster than previous models.

The company also announced updates to the Cirrus IQ mobile app, and premium exterior and interior Cirrus Xi options.

“The model year 2022 G6 SR is refreshed to seamlessly sync with your life—taking you further, keeping you connected and distinguishing your style in the air and on the ramp,” said Ivy McIver, director of the SR series, in a statement. “This latest update to the G6 embodies our passion for continued innovation and commitment to design.”

In a detail that lifestyle gurus won't miss, McIver introduced the airplane wearing a crushed velvet jacket that matched the new Himalayan Salt paint scheme.

Cirrus will begin delivering the new models later this week.

“The new G6 SR Series is a testament to our devotion to constantly enhance both comfort and safety features across our product lines,” said Zean Nielsen, CEO of Cirrus Aircraft. “In 2022, we are poised to continue as the market leader in personal aviation and streamline the flying experience with the G6 SR Series aircraft.”

Drag Reduction to Better Efficiency

Reducing overall drag produced by the airframe is critical to improving fuel efficiency. To this end, Cirrus has introduced “sleeker” wings and tail surfaces—but has also smoothed the ice panel transition seams on the leading edges and tightened tolerances on the wheel pants.

The redesigned baggage door features a remote unlocking system with keyless entry. The door itself opens past a 90-degree angle and will remain open during the loading process—with a deeper pocket that can hold two standard quart-bottles of oil.

Illuminated steps and a puddle light ease entry and egress at night or in other low-light conditions. An updated USB panel features both USB-A and USB-C ports. A new palette of color options has been created in partnership with Sherman Williams Aerospace.

The updated Cirrus IQ app has a reconfigured status screen and the following functions:

  • The Maintenance Minder tracks upcoming inspections and sends notifications when they are due. The flight hour meter automatically updates the inspection cards while flying, providing a progress bar and countdown to the upcoming inspection event.
  • The My Trip module automatically logs every flight and offers key trip statistics and achievements earned while flying. My Trips will be released in February 2022.
  • The Warranty section gives the date and flight-hour limits of coverage for Spinner-to-Tail warranty, and CMX coverage, as applicable.

Building the Legacy

More than 8,000 units of the Cirrus SR series—including the SR20, SR22, SR22T, and Trac models—have been delivered as of the first of the year. The SR20 was introduced 20 years ago to the market, and it has often led the pack in sales numbers in its class.
