** Boca Raton Control Tower**
Gemini Sparkle

Key Takeaways:

  • The FAA is phasing in the closure of 149 contract control towers across three dates: April 7 (24 towers), April 21 (46 towers), and May 5 (79 towers).
  • These shutdowns are a direct consequence of a mandated $600 million budget cut to the FAA due to sequestration, leading to a 75 percent reduction in the Contract Tower Program budget.
  • Towers are being closed based on their activity levels, with those having fewer commercial operations being shut down first.
  • The FAA anticipates these tower closures will result in an estimated savings of $32.8 million this year.

The FAA has released a three-part phase-in period for closing 149 of the nation’s contract control towers. The shutdowns will start on April 7, when 24 federal contract towers will close, followed by 46 on April 21, and the remaining 79 on May 5 (see the full list below).

The FAA says it is closing the towers based on activity levels, with the first to close having fewer than 1,000 commercial operations in fiscal year 2012, the second group fewer than 2,500 commercial operations and the third group more than that.
