GE’s VP of Business and General Aviation Brad Mottier on Monday announced that GE was in the process of buying at least two HondaJets, with the purchase symbolically taking place at NBAA on Tuesday. The HondaJet is equipped with the GE Honda Aero HF120 Engine. The company is a joint venture between Honda and GE, two storied engine manufacturers with very different backgrounds. The high-efficiency turbofan, which was certified in 2013, is a point of pride for both companies. The HondaJet is scheduled for certification in the first quarter of next year.
Mottier, vice president and general manager of GE general and business aviation division, said that because GE has manufacturing facilities all over North America, it became an important need to help program managers and other supply chain employees to get quickly and efficiently to suppliers and other GE facilities, of which there are many.
Over the past several years GE has invested $3.5 billion in aviation engine manufacturing alone. “We decided to see how we could make our supply chain work more smoothly,” Mottier said. The natural conclusion, apparently, was a GE/Honda powered light jet.
