Key Takeaways:

  • Dynon's EFIS-D10A provides a low-cost, non-TSO'd electronic flight instrumentation system (EFIS) approved for installation in certified aircraft via an EAA-facilitated Supplemental Type Certificate (STC).
  • Priced from $2,200, the unit replaces the traditional attitude indicator, offering comprehensive primary flight data including safety-enhancing angle-of-attack information, and is approved for IFR flight.
  • Fitting into a standard instrument hole, the EFIS-D10A's blanket STC covers a broad range of legacy aircraft, making it an accessible upgrade.

With so much new technology springing up within the aviation market it’s hard to compete. But Dynon found the right niche when it launched the EFIS-D10A last year. The EFIS-D10A is one of the early non-TSO’d units allowed in certified aircraft under a supplemental type certificate, in this case brought by the EAA.

At a price point starting at $2,200, the EFIS-D10A allows for a low-cost path for certified aircraft owners to replace the round-gauge attitude indicator with a full electronic flight instrumentation system. While attitude, airspeed, altitude, rate-of-turn, rate-of-climb, inclinometer and heading information are all incorporated into the EFIS, the remaining five round-gauges need to stay in the panel.

The unit slots right into a standard instrument hole and it is approved for IFR flight. In addition to primary flight information, the EFIS-D10A incorporates a G-meter, winds aloft, clock, voltmeter and more. It also has angle-of-attack data, safety-enhancing information that the FAA has looked favorably upon and has allowed for a quick path to STC’d installation in certified airplanes as separate units as well.

The blanket STC achieved by the EAA for the EFIS-D10A covers a long list of legacy aircraft, including Cessnas, Pipers, Beechcraft, Mooneys, and more.
