Dream Date for a Turboprop Pilot

Gemini Sparkle

Key Takeaways:

  • The author details a "dream day" experience flying a new Cessna CJ1 jet from New Hampshire to Florida, highlighting its impressive speed, high-altitude performance, and comfortable ride compared to his personal turboprop.
  • He praises the CJ1's ease of operation, simplified start sequence, and advanced avionics, including the Collins Pro Line 21 and Universal FMS, which significantly aided navigation and weather management.
  • Despite the jet's capabilities, the flight encountered severe thunderstorms upon arrival in Tampa, necessitating a diversion to Ocala, a real-world operational challenge efficiently handled with the aircraft's systems and crew expertise.
  • The experience left the author deeply enamored with the CJ1, expressing a profound desire to own one due to the unparalleled joy and efficiency of flying the entry-level jet.

I have never been more reluctant to pull back the power levers and start descent than I was on that remarkable Sunday afternoon. It meant that the trip of a lifetime was coming to an end and that my dream day was finite. You see, I was in the left seat of a brand new Cessna CJ1 at 41,000 feet, and I didn’t want to ever come down.

I knew right where to come down, though. The Collins Pro Line 21 equipment showed me exactly where the TOD (top of descent point) was, what the relationship between our proposed arrival route into Tampa and the thunderstorms was, and what our airspeed, groundspeed, wind speed, and air temps were. That wasn’t the half of it, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
