California has enacted the first U.S. state ban on leaded aviation gasoline, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.
The ban takes effect in 2031, aligning with the FAA's timeline for an approved replacement fuel, but will proceed regardless if the FAA misses its deadline.
The original bill's proposed 2026 phase-out date was pushed to 2031 following lobbying efforts by aviation industry groups.
From 2031, the law prohibits airport operators and any public or private entity from selling or distributing leaded aviation fuel.

That’s the day after the FAA has said it will have a fully approved replacement fuel for 100LL through its End Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) program.
