Key Takeaways:

  • Southwest Airlines is mandating additional, one-day training sessions for all nearly 11,000 pilots starting November 2024 and extending into 2025.
  • This requirement comes after a string of high-profile "safety events" or lapses in recent months, which the airline aims to address by discussing specific incidents and improving risk management.
  • Notable incidents include a flight dropping to within 400 feet of the Pacific Ocean, multiple low altitude alerts, and a takeoff from a closed runway.
  • The airline acknowledges the spike in incidents, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently conducting a safety audit on the carrier.
