Key Takeaways:

  • The FAA has issued a final rule mandating Safety Management Systems (SMS) for charter, air tour operators, and many aviation manufacturers.
  • This requirement aims to prevent accidents, save lives, and proactively identify and manage safety risks before they escalate into crises.
  • SMS involves four core components: safety policy, risk management, assurance, and promotion, and aligns with existing mandates for airlines (since 2018) and airports (since last year), as well as international aviation standards.
