Scores Killed in Indonesian C-130 Crash

Transport plane goes down in neighborhood.

An Indonesian air force C-130 transport plane carrying military personnel crashed into a residential neighborhood in the country’s third-largest city of Medan shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, killing all aboard the airplane and scores more on the ground.

An Indonesian air force spokesman told reporters the death toll in the crash was confirmed as 74 with the number expected to rise as the recovery efforts continue.

Television footage showed the mangled wreckage of the C-130 Hercules amid burning cars and a destroyed building that local media said was recently built and contained shops and homes. Smoke billowed from the site as several thousand bystanders watched the scene nearby.

Officials said the C-130 took off from Jakarta with 113 people on board, but made two stops before the crash, making it difficult to determine exactly how many passengers were on the flight when it went down.
