Flying Musicians Open Scholarship Program for 2021

The organization blends the natural complements of flying and music in its outreach to mentor pilots.

Are you a young musician looking to turn your talents to the skies? Or do you know one whose passion for aviation needs nurturing and mentoring—just as their skills on the piano, guitar, or drums do? You still have time to look into the Flying Musicians Association’s scholarship program for 2021. The organization blends the natural complements of flying and music in its outreach to mentor pilots.

The FMA 2021 Solo Program accepts nominations from music teachers and directors for junior and senior high school students in the US who demonstrate a desire to fly as well as excel in music. The program supports an aspiring pilot from zero flight time through first solo. Nominations will be accepted through January 31, 2021, and all nominees will receive a sponsored FMA membership, along with t-shirts and other gifts donated by FMA sponsors and members.

The skills and aptitudes, such as practice, precision, working with others, multitasking, and performance are well known to famous pilot-musicians such as Aaron Tippin, who supports the program. “Flying and music are my two passions in life, and the Flying Musicians have put both of those together for a great cause,” said Tippin in a press release. “I believe educating the next generation is so important for music and aviation to continue on.”

Sporty’s president and CEO Michael Wolf also attributes those skills to his eventual success leading the well-known aviation retailer and flight training developer. “I used to be in the band and also drum corps and I feel it made me a more focused and better person,” said Wolf. “I feel it helped me become the president and CEO of Sporty’s.”

FMA president and CEO John Zapp said, “FMA members love assisting others who share our passions of flying and music. To be able to assist and watch our student members grow through aviation and music while inspiring others is such a rewarding experience. The program has soloed twelve students, with one in the wings! There are now many additional private pilots that have come from this program.”
