Is Steve Wozniak Launching a Space Company?

Apple co-founder teases to a new venture called Privateer Space expected to be announced this week.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak could be the next entrepreneur to enter the space business.

In a cryptic tweet Sunday, he said: “A Private space company is starting up, unlike the others,” with a link to a 59-second YouTube video.

The video description reads: “Privateer Space is working to keep space safe and accessible to all humankind.” It adds that Ripcord founder Alex Fielding, also formerly with Apple, is part of the company, as well. While the video itself does not provide details of what the company will do, it features clips seemingly related to pollution, as well as milestones such as the lunar landing.

A voiceover says, “Here’s to taking care of what we have so the next generation can be better together.”

A website for the company has gone live but is equally vague, with text on the homepage reading, “The sky is no longer the limit.” The page says more details will be announced at the 22nd Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) Conference, which is set to take place September 14-17 on Maui.

Meanwhile, social media has been lighting up with commenters speculating on what the business could be, with some suggesting he’s launching a space garbage business and others questioning whether it’s real at all.

Some even poked fun at the company name. “A privateer was a pirate who was paid to kill people. For example, Blackbeard. I’d abandon ship with that name,” one commenter said on Twitter. Another responded: “I think this company will be paid to kill/deorbit defunct satellites.”

On his website, Wozniak describes himself as a “lifelong prankster.” He also took some time in 2009 to compete in Season 8 of ABC’s reality TV series “Dancing with the Stars.”

On the serious side, Woz recently co-founded Efforce, which leverages blockchain technology applications. He has also collaborated with Fielding on several projects in the past.
