GE Aviation Taps Embraer Exec For Top Post

John Slattery takes on role of president and CEO as David Joyce retires.

GE Aviation named John Slattery as president and CEO of the division, effective July 13, replacing David Joyce, who is retiring from the company after 40 years. Joyce has been in the leadership roles for 12 years, overseeing the “complete renewal of [GE Aviation’s] product portfolio, including 10 different engine families, resulting in groundbreaking improvements in fuel efficiency, emissions, and noise,” according to a GE Aviation press release. The developments took the division into a prime position amongst the General Electric portfolio—and doubled its revenue from $16.5 billion to $33 billion.

Slattery was previously president and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation. Arjan Meijer assumes the roles at Embraer that Slattery has vacated, effective immediately, as part of a restructuring process reintegrating the commercial division. Meijer, who has been chief commercial officer of Embraer Commercial Aviation, succeeds Slattery after joining the company in April 2016 as vice president of commercial aviation for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Russia. Prior to joining Embraer, Meijer spent 15 years in a succession of executive positions at the KLM Group.

GE Chairman and CEO H. Lawrence Culp, Jr., had high praise for both Joyce and Slattery. “We worked hard to find a worthy successor to David. In John, we have found a proven aerospace leader whose international commercial experience, strategic acumen, and industry expertise can make our leading Aviation franchise even stronger. John’s relentless focus on the customer experience over decades in the aviation industry has earned him deep relationships with many of GE’s customers, suppliers, and partners. He is well-suited to serve their needs as Aviation executes through the current environment and eventual recovery.”
