FAA Awards More Improvement Grants to Airports

A total of 60 facilities in 31 states will divide $431.8 million in final round of funding for year.

Dozens of U.S. airports will receive nearly $432 million in federal grants to offset the cost of safety and environmental projects, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced.

Some of the projects slated for funding at 60 airports include:

  • New general aviation parking areas
  • Zero-emission passenger shuttle buses
  • Runway replacement and taxiway extension and repair

The $431.8 million in Airport Improvement Program grants represent the last round of funding for Fiscal Year 2021. They go to airports in 31 states, in addition to Puerto Rico and the U.S Virgin Islands.

“To get passengers where they need to be safely and sustainably, we must make ongoing investments in our aviation system,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “These grants will help fulfill our commitment to build a safer, more equitable and more sustainable future,”

Airports receiving the AIP grants will not be required to match the funding, as typically required, due to funding provided through the Biden Administration’s American Rescue Plan, FAA said.

“With today’s awards, the FAA has provided $3.2 billion in airport funds this year to improve safety, environmental stewardship, and accessibility,” FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said. “These grants support airport infrastructure across our National Airspace System, providing federal investment to communities of all sizes, from remote areas to major metropolitan cities.”
