Abingdon Foundation Launches Website to Promote STEAM Fields

Nonprofit foundation also awards 2020 Women in Aviation International scholarship.

Calling it a “revolutionary virtual clearinghouse” for all STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) fields, the nonprofit Abingdon Foundation has just launched AbingdonFoundation.org as a means to bring together jobs, for sale items, activities, community events, scholarships, mentorships, educational opportunities, etc. at no cost.

Users who visit the site will be able to create a free account and then have the opportunity to make as many posts as they want. Ads will last up to six months with the option to renew.

“This site is incredible. It’s Craigslist for STEAM,” said Abingdon Foundation president and founder Abingdon Mullin. “If you have old engineering books you don’t use and want to donate or sell them, post them in the For Sale section. If you have a scholarship you offer, post it in Scholarships. If you represent an organization in STEM, post about it in Organizations. Space camps or career fairs in your area can be advertised on the site. We want this to be the number one website for people who need assistance in furthering their opportunity in a STEAM field.”

The Foundation also recently named Chelsea Montgomery as the 2020 winner of their “It’s About Time Women in Aviation International (WAI)” scholarship. As with previous winners, Montgomery, 21, was presented with a trip to the WAI conference held March 5 to 7 in Orlando, Florida. The conference overall delivered $831,365 in scholarship monies to people across aviation’s many disciplines.

“The idea behind our scholarship program is to provide opportunities, not hand out money. Chelsea will be escorted to various events and introduced to key players in the aviation industry, courtesy of several Abingdon Foundation board members and volunteers. The true value of this scholarship is the connections the winner walks away with at the end of the event,” said Mullin.

Montgomery is a flight student in Phoenix, Arizona, and she created an imaginative “Skybox,” which could be adapted to all STEAM fields and then provided to people beginning on their career path. “By receiving a STEAM ‘care package’ filled with items pertinent to their expressed passion,” Montgomery stated in her application, “my hope is that it will spark imaginations and encourage women, a historically underrepresented group in aviation and other STEAM fields, to take the next steps in achieving their dream.”

The Abingdon Foundation is a Las Vegas-based 501(c)(3) established in 2017 with a mission to “empower and accelerate the female pursuit of more than just STEAM fields, either recreationally or professionally through conversation, education, outreach, sponsorship, and networking.”
