A new writing prize, named after famed aviation journalist Richard Collins, created especially for young journalists, was just announced by Sporty’s. The winning writer could take home the Richard Collins Writing Prize for Young Pilots prize of $2,500. Richard Collins’ (above) career as an aviation journalist spanned 60 years, including more than 10 years as editor-in-chief of Flying.
Applicants must meet just a few entry requirements. First, the writer must be 24 years of age or younger and also be a pilot. Student pilot status is acceptable. They must pen a general aviation story of no more than 1,500 words, with any topic acceptable. The story however, must be original and never before published. The winning article will be published in Air Facts, the publication Richard’s father Leighton founded in 1938 that was relaunched eight years ago as an online magazine by Sporty’s.
All articles will be judged by a panel of three, Richard Collins, Jr., J. Mac McClellan, and Amy Laboda. Articles, as well as a 100-word author bio, may be submitted now through March 1, 2019 and should be submitted as a Word document to [email protected]. The winner will receive a check for $2,500 to be awarded at the 2019 Sun’n Fun Fly-In at Lakeland, FL.
“This writing prize honors two passions of my father – Air Facts and finding new writing talent among young pilots,” says Richard’s son, Rich. “My sisters, Charlotte and Sarah and I are honored to not only help fund this prize, but to help continue my father’s legacy. We know this effort would make him happy.”
